An unique encounter - saving a Temminck's or Ground pangolin

For more than 30 years in the bush, pangolins evaded me. I saw one live animal briefly from the air a few years ago, and several bodies entangled in fences. Many tracks reminded me of poor timing and bad luck. While other people were enchanted by their peculiar presence, they remained ghosts to me… until this weekend when we had the amazing privilege to stabilize a confiscated female pangolin… the most trafficked species in the world. It’s an amazing creature with challenging anatomical features.. yet so specialized and well adapted to its evolved lifestyle. Thanks to our team at the surgery, a local rescue network created by a private public partnership, and of course the expertise of my colleague Dr Karen Louwrens, the pangolin seems ok and ready to start a rehab program. Karen directed treatment to make it feel so easy… signs of years of experience, interest and saving pangolins. Thanks guys. It is definitely a highlight for me…She was released successfully and we are greatfull for the privilege > We need your support to assist with drugs, transport and setting up holding facilities before release
